Ornamentation Glossary

The most basic embellishment in bagpipe music. A very brief touch of a higher note (usually E or High A) to cleanly separate two melody notes. Duration is approximately 20–30ms — it should be heard as a click rather than a distinct pitch.

A gracenote on High A followed immediately by a strike (brief Low G gracenote) on the note being doubled. This creates a crisp re-articulation of the note with a distinctive rhythmic snap. It is one of the most frequently used ornaments in light music.

A specific ornament executed on the note D. It consists of a gracenote from D down to Low G and then back up to D, creating a characteristic ‘throwing’ sound. The Low G is extremely brief — the ornament should sound like a single articulated gesture.

A brief dip to Low G inserted between two melody notes. The Low G sounds for approximately 30ms. In pibroch, the grip (or leumluath) is fundamental to the variation structure. In light music, it provides strong rhythmic emphasis. The grip is sometimes described as a ‘catch’ in the melody.

A rapid ornament executed on Low A involving two quick Low G gracenotes in succession. It produces a distinctive rolling or ‘birling’ sound. There are three common forms: the standard birl (two quick Low G gracenotes on Low A), the G-gracenote birl (preceded by a G gracenote), and the thrown birl (which includes a throw-like movement).

A complex compound ornament consisting of a rapid sequence: Low G gracenote, then D gracenote, then E gracenote, executed in very quick succession. It is essential to pibroch where it forms the basis of the taorluath variation. The ornament demands precise coordination and produces a distinctive cascading articulation.

The most complex standard ornament in bagpipe music. It extends the taorluath by adding an additional Low G gracenote before the theme note. The full sequence involves five rapid finger movements. Mastering the crunluath is the pinnacle of pibroch ornamentation and a key differentiator at the highest levels of competition.

The open form of the crunluath, where the final note is allowed to ring openly rather than being immediately closed. This is even more demanding than the standard crunluath because the open finish exposes any imprecision in the preceding movements. It represents the ultimate test of finger technique in Great Highland Bagpipe playing.
